Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly addressed the recent failed coup led by the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Putin called the coup organizers “traitors” and accused them of playing into the hands of the Ukrainian government and its allies. The coup, which lasted less than 24 hours, posed a serious threat to Putin’s authority and Russia’s stability.
During his televised address, Putin thanked Wagner’s fighters who resisted engaging in violent conflict, thus avoiding mass bloodshed. He praised the rank and file mercenaries for their unity, endurance and patriotism, saying, “From the very beginning of the events, measures were taken at my command to avoid massive bloodshed.” The move showed Putin’s determination to maintain stability in the country.
“This was exactly the kind of fratricide that Russia’s enemies wanted: both the neo-Nazis in Kiev and their Western patrons, and all kinds of national traitors. They wanted Russian soldiers to kill each other,” he stressed.
“Civic solidarity showed that any kind of blackmail, any attempt to organize internal chaos, would fail.”
In the aftermath of the coup, Prigozhin, the mastermind behind the coup, provided few details about his fate and whereabouts, leaving his future uncertain. Putin made no mention of Prigosan in his address, instead focusing on the broader implications of the coup and the unity the nation has shown in confronting the crisis.
The coup ended a long-running feud between Prigozhin and Russia’s military leadership, which centered mainly around the failed military campaign in Ukraine. Prigogne claimed that his goal was to prevent the destruction of the Wagner group and to hold those responsible for the campaign’s failures accountable. He said that the uprising was intended as a demonstration of protest rather than an attempt to overthrow the government.
Putin further warned against attempts to sow unrest in Russia, stressing that such efforts would ultimately fail. He pointed out that Russia’s domestic and international enemies have miscalculated by trying to pit Russian troops against each other. Putin’s strong stance reflected his determination to maintain the country’s stability and prevent any potential threats to his long-standing rule.
The Kremlin released footage of Putin meeting with top security, law enforcement and military officials, underscoring his determination to deal with the situation quickly. Additionally, a video was released showing Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who Prigozhin called for, to be removed from his position while reviewing troops in Ukraine. These measures were intended to create a sense of normalcy and control within the Russian government.
