KARACHI: In a tragic development on Thursday, the first day of Eid-ul-Azha, star snooker player Muhammad Majid Ali – the Asian Under-21 silver medalist – committed suicide after battling depression for the past several years, family sources confirmed.
Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Chairman Alamgir Shaikh broke the news to fellow players and members of the sports body through a text message.
This was the second such news in a month for the Pakistan snooker community which mourned the death of Muhammad Bilal last month.
The details of Majid’s death are more shocking and gruesome.
Majid’s brother Umar confirmed that it was a case of suicide.
Majid ended his life using a wood-cutting machine in his home town of Saadiran near Faisalabad.
His brother confirmed that Majeed had been suffering from depression for the past few years, but the reasons were unknown, and there were no financial problems.
The PBSA chairman told JEE News that he was shocked to learn about the death of young Majid.
“He was an extraordinary talent, although recently out of the rankings, he always showed great potential,” he said.
“We are saddened to learn of his death, a great loss to the Pakistan snooker community,” he concluded.
