Downdetector reported that the microblogging platform, Twitter, was inaccessible to thousands of users around the world on Saturday night as they complained of experiencing problems using the social networking website.

According to Down Detector, which reports the outage of websites and platforms, more than 7,000 users worldwide reported that they could not access the platform. A total of over 5,000 complaints were reported from the UK alone.

Users in other countries – including Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey and Germany – also reported experiencing problems with Elon Musk’s platform.

He complained that the platform was unable to load tweets, with many people only able to see posts from Friday evening.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. Twitter Inc has yet to comment directly on the matter.

According to an online usage tracker, Twitter saw a sharp spike in outages at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Musk revealed that Twitter has set certain daily limits for reading tweets to “address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation”.

A day earlier, the billionaire wrote on the microblogging site that “the platform hit another high in user seconds last week”.

Twitter outages were also reported in May, with more than 3,600 incidents of people reporting problems with the microblogging platform, according to Downdetector.

It was also reported in February that many Twitter users were unable to tweet, follow accounts or access their direct messages.
