Newcastle United have completed the signing of English winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester City for a substantial fee of around £38m.

The 25-year-old, who has already earned one cap for the England national team, signed a lucrative five-year deal with the Magpies.

Barnes becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of forward Yankoba Mantea and Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali. Delighted with his move, Barnes expressed his excitement about joining the club, describing it as “a striker’s dream” to be part of such a team. He looks forward to contributing to a successful squad that is making exciting progress in football.

Newcastle United’s exceptional performance in the Premier League last season saw them finish fourth, and qualify for the prestigious Champions League for the first time since 2003-04. This success adds an extra dimension to Barnes’ move to the club, as he will now have the chance to compete at the highest level of European club football.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe expressed his delight at Barnes’ arrival, hailing the winger as an exciting talent he has long admired. Howe highlighted Barnes’ strong physical attributes, quickness, excellent technical skills, and ability to find the back of the net from wide positions.

Barnes’ departure from Leicester City follows their relegation from the Premier League. During his time at the club, he appeared in 146 Premier League games, scoring 35 goals and providing 25 assists. Although Barnes scored 13 league goals in the 2022–23 season, it was not enough to prevent Leicester from reaching the Championship.

Leicester City have seen several key players leave the club following their relegation. James Maddison moved to Tottenham Hotspur in a £40 million deal, while midfielder Uri Tielemans and defender Kegler Suwonko left on free transfers, joining Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid respectively.

As Harvey Barnes begins a new chapter with Newcastle United, the winger’s skills and contributions will no doubt be closely watched by fans and rivals alike, making him a key figure in the Magpies’ ambitions for the future.
