Russia has accused Ukraine of being behind the drone strike that damaged at least two buildings in the capital Moscow on Monday morning.
The Russian Defense Ministry said two drones were “subdued and crashed”, adding that there were no casualties.
JEE News reported that a drone crashed near the Ministry of Defense.
Ukrainian officials have not yet commented, but they rarely claim responsibility for attacks inside Russia.
In a separate development, Russian-installed authorities ordered people to evacuate a district of Crimea – Ukraine’s southern peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014 – after a reported Ukrainian drone strike overnight.
An ammunition depot in the northern Zhankoy region was hit, and residents of nearby villages were told to leave their homes, Kremlin-appointed regional chief Sergei Aksenov said. They did not report any casualties.
Meanwhile, Ukraine said four people were injured and a grain hangar was destroyed in fresh Russian drone strikes over its southern Odesa region. It said the country’s port infrastructure on the Danube was targeted.
Russia has continued to attack the Odesa region – home to Ukraine’s major Black Sea ports – since withdrawing from a landmark grain deal last week.
In Moscow, the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said drone strikes in the Russian capital targeted “non-residential” buildings around 04:00 local time (01:00 GMT). In a post on social media, he added that there was no major damage to the buildings.
But state news agencies reported that some of the drone fragments were found just 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Defense Ministry buildings.
“An attempt by the Kiev government to carry out a terrorist attack using two drones on the territory of the city of Moscow was foiled,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The wreckage of the drone was also found along the city’s Komsomolsky Avenue, Russian news agencies said. Moscow’s transport department wrote on Telegram that traffic was blocked on the route and pictures showed emergency services working at the scene.
Traffic was also blocked on Lakachev Avenue, where a high-rise office building was damaged. Footage aired on the military Zvezda TV channel shows windows missing from the top of the building.
Moscow has accused Ukraine of several drone strikes on its territory in recent months.
Earlier this month, Russia said Ukraine carried out a drone attack on Moscow, forcing flights to be diverted from Vinkovo International Airport. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility.
And in May, Kiev denied carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin, which Russia said was an attempt on the life of President Vladimir Putin.
Monday’s attack came just a day after Russia hit Odessa with missile strikes, destroying the historic Transfiguration Cathedral.
The United Nations cultural agency UNESCO said it “condemns in the strongest possible terms” the attack on the historic center of Odessa.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to retaliate for the attack.
“They will definitely feel it,” he said during his nightly address to Kiev. “All these missiles are not just targeting cities, villages or people. They are targeting humanity and the foundations of our entire European culture.”
