In a surprise upset at the Women’s World Cup, Nigeria produced a memorable 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia, leaving fans stunned.
Early on, it looked like the home fans’ celebration was in order when Emily van Egmond headed home a stunning move just before half-time, giving Australia the lead. However, Nigeria had other plans and quickly responded with a goal from Yochana Kanu, who was able to curl in a criss-crossing goal to get Nigeria’s first goal of the 2023 tournament.
In the second half, Nigeria consolidated their position with a close-range header from Osinachi Ohale and a tight angle finish from Asisat Oshoala. Oshwala’s goal is also a historic achievement, as she became the first African player to score in three Women’s World Cups. Although Australia managed to score through Ilana Kennedy in extra time, it was not enough to prevent Nigeria’s famous victory, which sent the Super Falcons to the top of Group B.
Nigeria head coach Randy Waldrum expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, praising their belief and determination. The win showed the players’ determination, resilience and ability to counter Australia’s relentless attacks in the later stages of the game.
The defeat came as a blow for Australia, especially with star striker Sam Kerr ruled out with a shin injury. The team will now have to regroup and win against Canada in their final group game to secure a place in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup.
