Five people, including the deputy imam of a mosque in Gurgaon, were killed and more than 50 injured during Hindu-Muslim clashes near New Delhi in the Indian state of Haryana, JEE News reported.

The violence erupted when a Hindu religious procession passed through the Muslim-majority area of Noh, about 50 kilometers from the country’s capital, JEE News reported, citing relevant police officials.

Noah Police spokesperson Krishan Kumar said that the purpose of the procession was to go from one temple to another but clashes broke out between two groups on the way.

Two of the dead, he added, were members of the Home Guard, a volunteer force assisting the police in controlling civil unrest. While 10 more police personnel were also injured in the riot.

By Monday night, the violence had spread to neighboring Gurugram, where a mosque was torched around midnight, killing one person and injuring another.

Meanwhile, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said curfew has been imposed in the district on Tuesday and schools and colleges have been directed to remain closed.

The situation in the region remains tense while no fresh violence has been reported. However, security has been beefed up in Noh and other areas, JEE News reported.

“The attackers (who torched the mosque) have been identified and several of them have been arrested,” Gurgaon police said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also condemned the incident in a post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, where curfew orders have been imposed and the internet has been shut down. Is.

He said that the guilty will not be spared at any cost, strictest action will be taken against them.
