ISLAMABAD: Inland Revenue Service (IRS) grade 21 officer Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana is a likely candidate to take charge as the new chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), JEE News reported on Tuesday citing sources.
According to the summary, three names including Rashid Mahmood Langriyal from Pakistan Administrative Service Group were considered. Amjad Zubair Tiwana, current member of FBR, IRS operations; and Syed Nadeem Rizvi, the most senior contender in the race.
Asim Ahmed, who was appointed as the FBR chief by the Shahbaz Sharif-led government on April 27 last year, has completed his tenure and retired on July 30 on his superannuation age.
Ahmed had also served as the FBR chairman in 2021, a few months before Javed Ghani’s retirement, but was replaced after the data hacking incident occurred in the FBR.
At the time of re-appointment to this role, he was third in the seniority list of IRS officers.
The summary is expected to be approved today and an announcement will be made regarding the appointment of the new FBR chief.
The new head of the tax collection authority will face a tough task as the country has set a target of Rs 9.415 trillion for the current financial year as per the International Monetary Fund commitment.
