Elon Musk’s platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, has implemented a new feature that allows paying members to hide their blue verification marks.
The change comes after Musk changed the criteria for getting a BlueTick, now requiring a monthly fee instead of meeting specific qualifications. Users who subscribe to XBlue for $8 a month can now choose to hide their checkmarks on their profiles and posts. However, the checkmark may still appear in some areas, and some features may indicate the user’s active membership status.
The platform faced criticism for the changed verification process, which indicated the authenticity of the user, which was given to public figures, media personalities and politicians.
Since Musk took over the platform last year, he has been making various changes to improve the authentication process and expand the subscription service. Despite the new option to hide the blue checkmark, it has become a subject of controversy. Some users see this as an opportunity to maintain privacy and avoid ridicule for paying for verification, while others say it reduces the value and transparency of the badge on the platform.
Lili Reinhart, an actress and social media influencer, expressed concern over the change, saying that the blue symbol used to make sense and now feels vulnerable. Similarly, renowned author Stephen King criticized the decision, saying that certification was once important, but now it’s just another benefit for those who can afford it.
