President Alvi will remain in office despite end of his term, Law Minister

Islamabad: According to JEE News, Federal Minister for Law Nazir Tarar said that President Arif Alvi will remain in office despite the end of his tenure.

The Minister told the media on Monday that according to the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, the constitutional post of the President cannot be left vacant.

He said that the electoral college of the President is the Parliament and the Provincial Assemblies, so the new President will be elected after the formation of the new government after the general elections.

As the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is yet to decide when the elections will be held after the delimitation of constituencies under the new census, Alvi will continue to serve as president until the new set-up takes charge. .

It may be noted that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approval of Census 2023, the ECP is bound by the new delimitations and on Monday, Home Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the polls may be postponed till March next year.

The ECP wants to hold the next general elections – tentatively scheduled for October or November this year – on the basis of a fresh digital census after “consensually” 2023 at the CCI meeting on Saturday. Head count was approved.
