Somalia’s Ministry of Communications and Technology has taken a decisive step by banning the use of online betting site 1XBET as well as two major social media platforms, TikTok and Telegram. The move follows a major communication, internet and social media security conference organized by the ministry, which prompted the ban.

This decision carries a lot of weight, due to the harmful effects of these platforms on the country’s youth. The move was officially announced by the Minister of Communications and Technology, Jama Hasan Khalif.

The government’s reasoning behind the move is rooted in growing concerns about the negative influence of TikTok, Telegram and 1XBet on the impressionable minds of the youth.

Khalif outlined that the ban is a controversial but necessary step taken to protect the Somali community’s moral values in communication and use of internet tools.

TikTok, known for its viral challenges and short content, has previously come under scrutiny from various African governments for promoting trends that could negatively impact a vulnerable youth population.

Meanwhile, Telegram, a messaging application often used for secret group communications, has raised security concerns across Africa due to its potential to facilitate illegal activities. At the same time, there have been concerns about 1XBet due to its potential to trigger gambling addiction among young people.

Khalif pointed out that these three platforms have made a significant impact on the lives of Somali youth.

The ease of access to these platforms has led to an increase in their use among the younger population, raising concerns about the potential for negative effects and exploitation.

In parallel, Kenya’s National Assembly is currently considering a petition calling for a ban on TikTok due to concerns about explicit content and inadequate regulation.

The petition said TikTok’s explicit content undermines Kenyan cultural and religious values, as it may inadvertently encourage violence, hate speech and obscenity.
