Former member of provincial assembly and leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sindh chapter Raja Azhar was detained in Sadar area of Karachi on Monday.
In a statement, former MNA and PTI leader Faheem Khan said Azhar was arrested from Sadar area, and the police had been trying to nab him for the past three days. However, he denied the claims that the former MPA was picked up by unknown persons who used strong language. “I strongly condemn the arrest of Azhar.”
Khan said that the manner in which the PTI leader’s residence was desecrated was a very shameful act. He added that Azhar was transferred to an unknown location, and neither the party nor his family knew about his whereabouts.
In a statement, Karachi PTI President Khurram Sher Zaman said that the arrest was just an act of revenge and a cause of deep concern. He said that unconstitutional arrests are weakening democracy in the country.
Zaman said that there have been continuous violations of human rights in the last 15 months. However, human rights organizations and the media were silent on PTI’s atrocities. He demanded that the Sindh Police stop making false allegations against PTI and end the crackdown.
Karachi PTI spokesperson said in a statement that Azhar has been arrested by Karachi Police. He said Azhar was in his car when he was stopped at a tea stall near his hotel. He said that the SHO of Sadar Thane arrested Azhar from the hotel premises when several police mobiles surrounded his vehicle.
