May 9 commotion: Imran Khan interrogated by special JIT in Attock jail.

ISLAMABAD: Since he is behind bars in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Attock Jail, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has been questioned by a special Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which arrived in the country on May 9. Investigating riots across the country. Anti Terrorism Court (ATC)

The court has allowed the police to question Khan in six more cases.

A five-member high-level JIT visited Attock jail a day ago to question the PTI chief – who is currently serving a three-year sentence after being convicted in the Toshakhana case. – for which he has been booked under the Sedition and Anti-Terrorism Acts in various cases.

During the investigation, the former prime minister – who was removed from office after a no-confidence motion against him in April 2023 – was booked under Section 121 (waging or attempting to wage or abet war against Pakistan). An investigation was conducted on the rise of crimes under , 131 (encouraging mutiny, or attempting to distract a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty) and 146 (sedition) are mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR).

Other offences, under which Khan was arrested, include sections 120, 120-A, 120-B, 121-A, 505, 153 of the PPC for his alleged involvement in the attacks on Askari Tower. 153-A, 153-B and 107, Shadman police station, and offices of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) in Lahore’s Model Town and Jinnah House, which served as the residence of the corps commander, were torched. Riots erupted across the country on May 9 following the arrest of the ousted prime minister in a £190 million settlement case. Hundreds of PTI activists and senior leaders were put behind bars for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations.

During the protest, miscreants targeted civil and military installations including Jinnah House and General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The army declared May 9 as “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.

To investigate the violence that followed, the police added provisions as per the case diary on August 18 after which it sought permission from the anti-terrorism court to investigate the PTI chief.

Court judge Ejaz Ahmad Butar issued this order on the request of the police.
