Former Olympic swimmer Helen Smith has tragically died during a family holiday in the Lake District, a place she loved.

The mother-of-two, a one-time Olympic athlete and now a head teacher, died untimely after retiring to bed.

Helen Smith, from Wigan, traveled to the Lake District with her parents, husband, children and extended family to celebrate her brother Rob’s 40th birthday. The holiday started on August 11 with paddle boarding through Lake Constance, with plans to hike the next day. Nicola Hill, of the wedding, spoke of the shock felt by the family. Helen’s sudden death was described as a “nightmare”, an event that felt surreal and hard to believe. Helen’s deep connection to the Lake District is reflected in her wedding reception, 40th birthday party, and even her hen party.

Helen Smith’s life was one of achievement. He swam for Team GB at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, winning medals at various events, including the Commonwealth Games and the World Short Course Championships. Helen’s father was also an educationist, and she followed in his footsteps to become a dedicated head teacher at Worsley Masons Community Primary School.

Nicola remembers Helen’s endless enthusiasm and work ethic, traits developed during her swimming career, and has carried this into her teaching profession. Helen’s optimism and vibrant spirit brightened any room she entered, and her dedication to her work and family was unwavering.

As tributes poured in from fellow players including Sharon Davies and Mark Foster, Helen’s legacy lives on. Her school and local swimming club have memorials to her, reflecting her inspiration for the swimming community.
