Asia Cup 2023: Hridoy heroics prove futile as Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s Toheed Hridoy emerged as the top scorer in today’s (Saturday) match in the Super 4 stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, but his heroics went in vain as Sri Lanka defeated Bengal Tigers by 21 runs in their first match. The surface

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan opted to bowl first against the opposition, who set a target of 257 runs thanks to Sudira Samara Wickrama’s brilliant innings at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Bengal Tigers got off to a good start as they started the run chase. However, when Mehdi Hasan Miraz was dismissed by Sri Lankan captain Dasan Shanaka for 28 runs, they started losing wickets at regular intervals.

After the fall of Liton Das, veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and Hridoy put on a 72-run partnership to give their team a much-needed break, the latter soon dismissing Shanaka for 29.

Hridoy top scored for his side with a valiant innings of 82 runs off 97 balls but his effort fell short as Mahesh Thiekshana took the wicket of Tawheed to give his team a breath of fresh air.

The entire Bangladesh team was bowled out for 236 runs in 48.1 overs.

For Sri Lanka, Theakshana and Shanaka took three wickets each while Mathisha Pathirana took two wickets.

For the home side, Samara Wickrama scored 93 runs off 72 balls which included eight fours and two sixes.

Kosal Mendis also scored a half-century in 73 balls with the help of six fours and a six.

Hasan Mehmood and Tasin Ahmed took three wickets each for Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka are yet to lose a single match in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.
