A two-member bench of the Supreme Court consisting of Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandyal and Justice Ayesha Malik heard the petition regarding acceptance of resignations from the National Assembly on behalf of PTI.
PTI’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry said in his arguments before the court that the Speaker cannot accept the resignations of the National Assembly in stages, they should be accepted at once.
On this, Chief Justice Justice Bandyal remarked that the Supreme Court cannot order the Parliament on the process of approving resignations. We cannot interfere in the internal affairs of Parliament.
The Chief Justice remarked that the Supreme Court could not do anything in the matter and advised PTI’s counsel to present their arguments on Article 69 as it was the only way the court could hear the matter.
The Supreme Court advised PTI to withdraw its resignation from NA and return to Parliament and gave time to take instructions from PTI chief Imran Khan on the appeal.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice said that PTI should play its role in Parliament in this trying time, millions of people are affected by floods. The flood has badly damaged the country’s economy.
Do you have any idea how much it will cost to conduct by-elections on 123 NA seats? Chief Justice Bandyal questioned PTI’s lawyer.
Justice Ayesha Malik in her remarks said that you [PTI] are asking to interfere in the matter of Parliament which will surely set a bad example.
Later, the Supreme Court adjourned the further hearing of the case indefinitely.
