Karachi administrator Murtaza Wahab resigned

Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab on Monday announced his resignation from his post after the High Court stopped the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from collecting taxes through the city’s power utility.

The announcement of resignation came after the Sindh High Court’s judgment which had temporarily restrained the KMC from collecting municipal tax through electricity bills.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab was appointed as the administrator of KMC on 6 August 2021.

Addressing a press conference, a disappointed Wahab lamented the court verdict, saying: “It would have been easy for me to ask the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister for funds, but I didn’t, because I think the law There is a way. The only solution.”

“There is a solution for everything in the constitution and law of the country.”

He said that according to the relevant law, the Metropolitan Corporation is authorized to levy tax.

Wahab added that when the city roads are submerged, no one knocks on the door of Wasim Akhtar or Naeemur Rehman and the citizens demand answers from me, the government and the KMC.

Wahab said Waseem Akhtar had hired a private contractor to collect taxes, pointing to corruption during the former mayor of the coastal city. “Once they collected Rs 200 million and they were given Rs 40 million,” he alleged.

The administrator also claimed that his hands were clean and asserted that he fought the filth in the system at the cost of his legitimate comfort.

Wahab said his mistake was that he loved KMC instead of his pocket.

“There are forces at work that do not allow us to do our work effectively. It is not easy to work in this city because everything is resisted here.

The outgoing administrator of the country’s financial center said he has diabetes and work-related stress is making it worse, affecting his health.

He said that he will send his resignation to the Sindh Chief Minister after this press conference.
