Islamabad on Tuesday strongly reprimanded the Indian foreign minister for making unnecessary remarks about Pakistan-US relations, calling the comments on the relationship “unnecessary” and against the norms of inter-state relations.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Foreign Office spokesperson responded to media queries regarding the Indian foreign minister’s remarks in New York.

Spokesman Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that Pakistan has long-standing and broad-based relations with the United States.

He said that these relations have been important in promoting peace, security and stability in the region.

In recent months, Ahmad said Pakistan-US ties have become stronger and more multifaceted, deepening people-to-people and bilateral ties.

He said that both countries are constructively engaged to maintain regional peace and security.

“India is urged to respect the basic principles of inter-state relations and refrain from commenting on bilateral relations between the US and Pakistan,” he said, affirming, “India is also required to maintain its diplomatic conduct.” There is a need for serious introspection.

Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar on Monday remarked at an event in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that the US-Pakistan relationship “is neither serving Pakistan well nor serving American interests”.

In response to questions on Monday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the US does not view its relations with either Pakistan or India as “reciprocal”.

“These two are our partners with different points of emphasis in each,” he had said.
