Spain pulled off a dramatic win over Portugal

Alvaro Morata scored a dramatic winner as Spain beat Portugal in Braga to qualify for the Nations League final.

The former Chelsea striker scored in the 88th minute after Nico Williams headed the ball into his path.

Portugal needed just a point to advance and had chances to score but Liverpool’s Diego Jota and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo both missed.

June’s finals will see Spain join Croatia, Italy and the Netherlands, who are expected to host all the games.

Portugal started the night top of Group A2 and will be wondering how they failed to book their place in next summer’s four-nation tournament.

They won the inaugural competition in 2018-19 and were the better team for most of the matches in northern Portugal.

A superb pass from Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was met by Jota, who shot on goal but was denied by a fine one-handed save from Spain goalkeeper Unai Simeone.

The hosts continued to create better chances early in the second half with Fernandes netting into the side netting and a Ronaldo shot blocked by Simeone.

Substitute Williams, who plays for Athletic Bilbao, made the difference for Spain and twice saved Diego Costa’s efforts.

But the Portugal goalkeeper had just two minutes left when Williams’ header went past him and Morata put the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Spain were runners-up in the Nations League final in 2021 and now have a chance to win the tournament in June.
