PSG Held as Messi Goal Cancelled Out by Benfica

A stunning goal from Lionel Messi was canceled out as Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica maintained their unbeaten Champions League record in an entertaining game in Portugal.

Messi opened the scoring with a curling shot after brilliant interplay with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

However, Benfica secured a draw when Danilo Pereira turned Enzo Fernandez’s cross into his own net.

The result means both sides have seven points from three games in Group H.

On that basis, both Benfica and PSG deserve a place in the round of 16 as they played a very entertaining encounter where only strong performances from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Odysseas Vlachodimos prevented the scoreline from being too big.

The opener came on 22 minutes and was vintage Messi. A brilliant team move down the right, Messi picked up the ball and combined with fellow forwards Neymar and Mbappe before curling seamlessly into the back of the net.

Benfica are the 40th different opponents to have scored against Argentina in the Champions League, and it was a strike to sit alongside Messi’s best player – but it was canceled out on 41 minutes.

A floating cross from the left wing from Fernandez, after Neymar sloppily cleared the ball away, fell past Danilo for his own goal inside the far post.

PSG were under a lot of pressure in the second half, and they hit the bar on 50 minutes when Neymar attempted a superb overhead kick after Vlachodemos had denied right-back Achraf Hakimi one-on-one.

Vlachodemos made further fine saves from Neymar and Hakimi, while Nicolas Otamendi missed Benfica’s best chance when he headed wide from six yards.

However, the two teams had to settle for a point, before they meet again in Paris next week.
