On Thursday, JEE News reported that President Dr. Arif Alvi will address a joint session of Parliament today (October 6) on the occasion of the last parliamentary year of the National Assembly.
According to the notification issued by the Presidency, the meeting has been called in accordance with Article 54(1) and 56(3) of the Constitution. It was further said that the President has called the meeting on the recommendation of the federal government.
President Arif Alvi will address the joint session of both houses of Parliament, Senate and National Assembly at 5 pm.
Clause three of Article 56 requires the President to address Parliament after every general election and the first session of the parliamentary year to inform the legislators of the “reasons for his summons”.
The President’s address to the joint session of the Parliament was to be held on August 14 after the commencement of the parliamentary year of the National Assembly.
Earlier in September, National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf postponed the joint session of Parliament on September 22 for the third time without giving any reason.
The official notification in this regard stated that the Speaker adjourned the joint session in exercise of his “powers conferred by rule 4 of the Parliament (Joint Sittings) Rules, 1973”.
In August, President Arif Alvi offered to play his part in bringing politicians to a table and said he was ready to talk to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
Talking to senior journalists at the Governor House, Arif Alvi said that the political leadership should think about the ongoing political and economic situation and put their egos aside and sit on the table to solve the problems.
He said that the President has a constitutional role and I am ready to play any role to mediate between political leaders, adding that he is ready to talk to Shehbaz Sharif and Imran Khan for the sake of the nation.
