PTI Senator Azam Swati Arrested for Tweeting Against Army Chief

According to a criminal complaint filed by the FIA, PTI Senator Azam Swati was arrested on Thursday for tweeting “extremely hateful and threatening messages” against state institutions, including the Army Chief. .

Azam Swati’s tweet named the army chief, and came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz were acquitted in a high-profile money laundering case yesterday.

“Congratulations to you Mr. Bajwa and very few to you. Your plan is really working and all the criminals are going free at the cost of this country. By letting these thugs go free, you have legitimized corruption. Now how do you predict the future of this country (sic),” he said.

Speaking to reporters outside the Sessions Court in the capital today, the PTI leader said that he was not arrested for violation of law, constitution or fundamental rights. He said he was “arrested for taking one name – Bajwa’s – and that is violation”.

When asked who arrested him, he said it was the FIA. When asked in which case, he alleged that he was tortured by “agencies”. He said that a Member of Parliament has been stripped of his clothes. “I am telling the nation.”

A First Information Report registered with the FIA’s Cybercrime Reporting Center in Islamabad, a copy of which has been seen by Jeenews.com, mentions that Swati had “contributed to the state institutions of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and its senior ” tweeted with “sinister motives and nefarious motives”. The FIR further stated that such threatening tweets of accusations and name-calling by the Twitter account i.e. @AzamKhanSwatiPK are an act of sedition to create a rift among the personnel/officers of the armed forces and harm the State of Pakistan. It is a mischievous act. .

Through the said tweet, the criminal complaint said, the accused “undermined the judicial system of the country and attempted to mislead army personnel from their loyalty to their duties as subordinates.”

“This is a calculated attempt to instill hatred in the minds of the people and army personnel/people against the COAS and the Pakistan Army and to create distrust in the judicial system. In such threatening tweets, accused Mohammad Azam Khan Swati has tried to infuriate the common people and the armed forces personnel by trying to create a sense of ill will among the pillars of the state.

The PTI leader was booked under Section 20 of the Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 under Sections 131 (inciting mutiny or attempting to divert a soldier from his duty), 500 (punishment for defamation), 501 (printing or engraving). was made with 505 (statements inciting public riot) and 109 (punishment for incitement) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
