According to the notification issued on Sunday, former Punjab Chief Minister and Muslim League (N) leader Hamza Shahbaz has been appointed as the leader of the opposition in the provincial assembly.

Hamza became the Chief Minister of Punjab on April 30, 2022, after which he was de-notified as the Leader of the Opposition.

However, after Pervaiz Elahi became the chief minister of the province, the PML-N-led government lost power in Punjab as the Supreme Court declared “illegal” the decision of former Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari in the election of the chief minister. It was stated.

Elahi – who was defeated by Hamza during the July 22 election for Punjab chief minister after 10 PML-Q votes were rejected by former deputy speaker Mazari – challenged the decision in the Supreme Court. was

In an 11-page brief order, the Supreme Court had said: “We find that the understanding and implementation of the above summary judgment as well as the violation of Article 63A(1)(b) of the Constitution by the Deputy Speaker.” The provisions have also been understood. Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, Lahore (Respondent No. 1) was clearly incorrect and erroneous and cannot be sustained.”

The order then declared Elahi as the officially elected Chief Minister of Punjab as it ruled that he had secured 186 votes against Hamza’s 179.
