Although alchemy, the process of turning any common metal into gold, has not yet been possible, scientists have succeeded in turning water into metal.
Water is a good conductor of electricity but it is not “metallic” unless it is put under extreme pressure. With the help of other metals, experts changed the state of water into a completely different element.
The experiment was originally conducted in 2021 and a paper was published in July of that year. Videos of the process are now shared with the public on YouTube.
This change occurs when pure water contacts electron-sharing alkali metals. In this case, the researchers used a mixture made of sodium and potassium.
A small amount of water vapor was exposed to a drop of this mixture. The water vapor began to condense and the droplet size increased.
One problem, though, is the fact that alkali metals react explosively with water. The experiment was conducted in space, but in normal environments the same process can be extraordinarily dangerous.
