Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) lawyers on Monday boycotted legal proceedings across the province against the ‘ignoring’ of Peshawar High Court (PHC) judges for promotion to the Supreme Court.

Due to the strike, the atmosphere was tense in the courts across the province.

The strike was called on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council, which asked all its members to boycott the courts. Lawyers mostly stayed away from proceedings in various courts including the Peshawar High Court.

KP Bar Council Vice Chairman Muhammad Ali Khan Jadoon has said in a statement issued here that in a joint meeting of the representatives of the Provincial Bar Councils and the members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) it was decided that the Supreme Court Appointment of Judges Judges will be on merit.

“There is a procedure for appointing judges in the constitution, but no Peshawar High Court judge was included in the JCP meeting for promotion to the Supreme Court.”

The Bar Council demanded that the Peshawar High Court nominate the names of senior judges to the Supreme Court.

Justice Isa, in his letter to Justice Bandyal on October 21, requested that “I humbly request the Honorable Chairman to act constitutionally, legally and ethically and withdraw the names of the junior judges who were appointed by the JCP has already rejected.” .
