Liverpool’s owners say they will “consider new shareholders” after reports the club is up for sale.

The Athletic reported that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which bought Liverpool in 2010, was “inviting offers”.

FSG said it was “fully committed to Liverpool’s success, both on and off the pitch.”

Liverpool, who were runners-up in the Premier League last season, are eighth in the table.

They have reached the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will face Real Madrid in last year’s final.

A statement from FSG read: “There have been recent ownership changes and rumors of ownership changes at Premier League clubs and inevitably we are regularly asked about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has received frequent expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool.

“FSG has previously stated that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.”

Liverpool’s supporters’ union, Spirit of Shankly, said it hoped fans would be consulted in any talks regarding the club’s new owners.

“We have seen reports today that FSG has put Liverpool FC up for sale,” he said in a statement.

“Spirit of Shankly has written to LFC for clarification and will await a response before commenting. However, we hope that both the Supporters’ Board and SOS will be engaged in some part of the process to ensure that any sale of supporters front and center and the first thoughts of potential owners.

“We will keep you updated.”

FSG bought Liverpool under its old name New England Sports Ventures in a £300 million deal.

Basketball star LeBron James has been part owner of Liverpool since 2011 and has a 2% stake worth £4.7m.

He has since become a minority partner in FSG, which also owns baseball side Boston Red Sox.

In March, private equity firm RedBird Capital Partners bought a stake in FSG for around $735m (£533m).

Liverpool principal owner John W Henry apologized to fans after the club withdrew from the proposed European Super League in April 2021.

Liverpool signed striker Darwin Nunes for £64m this summer, attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho for £5m and defender Kelvin Ramsay for £4.2m.

“From time to time I will be ready to take a bit more risk but I don’t decide that and that’s fine,” manager Jurgen Klopp said in August.
