The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a further Rs 0.51 per unit increase in electricity rates for consumers in Karachi.

The government had requested Nepra to approve an increase of 50 paise per unit in the tariff of K Electric (KE) under the Uniform Tariff Policy.

Nepra officials said that the new charges will be applicable in bills for the months of November, December and January.

According to the regulator, KE’s quarterly adjustment is Rs 3.55 per unit, of which Rs 0.51 per unit will be charged to consumers.

Meanwhile, the government will pay Rs 3.4 per unit as subsidy to cover the difference.

Nepra officials said they are already subsidizing electricity worth Rs 291 billion annually to K Electric customers.

However, the KE spokesperson claimed that the period for recovery of these charges by Nepra is yet to be determined, adding that the government will issue a notification in this regard.
