Fact Check: Home Minister’s Photo in Hospital is Real

A photo of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has been repeatedly shared in posts and WhatsApp groups showing him lying in a hospital bed wearing an oxygen mask. Several social media posts claim that the photo is fake.

The photo is original and was taken recently.

Claim
On November 11, fact-checker MOIB, a Twitter account run by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, tweeted a picture of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in a hospital, labeling it “fake news”. .

The caption read: “Spreading #FakeNews is not only unethical and illegal but also an insult to the nation.”

While some tweets alleged that nothing has happened to the minister and it was “all a drama”.

Reality
The picture is authentic. It was taken when the minister was admitted to a hospital in Rawalpindi, Punjab.

Home Minister’s son-in-law Rana Ahmad Shehryar confirmed over the phone with Geofact Check that the minister was admitted to the hospital on November 9 and the photo shared on social media was taken on the same day.

“This is a new picture, taken after a 10-minute procedure at the hospital,” Shehryar said. “He will be back home today or tomorrow.”

The Pakistan Muslim League (N)’s official Twitter handle also released a voice note from Sanaullah confirming that she had undergone a minor procedure.

“For those who are frightened by my picture from the operation theater,” Sanaullah was heard saying, “I would like to tell them that 20 years ago, around 2004, I had a heart operation. That’s why it’s important to have a minor procedure and general checkup every few years.

He further says that he is currently in Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology and National Institute of Heart Diseases Rawalpindi.
