According to the country’s state media reports, two prominent Iranian actresses have been arrested for publicly supporting anti-government protests.
JEE News agency says that Hingama Ghaziani and Katayoun Rehi are accused of colluding and working against Iranian authorities.
The two women had earlier appeared in public without headscarves as a sign of solidarity with the protesters.
The protests began in September after the death of a woman in police custody.
Mehsa Amini, 22, was detained by the moral police in the capital Tehran for breaking strict hijab rules. He died three days later on September 16.
There were reports that officers beat him with a baton and smashed his head against a car, but police denied that he had been abused and said he had suffered a heart attack.
JEE News says Ms Ghaziani and Ms Rehi – both multi-award-winning actresses – were detained on Sunday at the behest of Iran’s prosecutor’s office.
Before her arrest, Ms Ghaziani wrote on social media that “no matter what happens, know that I will always stand with the Iranian people”.
“This is probably my last post,” he added.
