Aftershocks were felt on Indonesia’s main island of Java, authorities said, killing at least 14 people and injuring hundreds.
The 5.6-magnitude quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) in the city of Cianjur in West Java, according to data from the US Geological Survey.
The tremors were felt about 100 kilometers away in the capital, Jakarta, where people in high-rise buildings were evacuated.
Officials have warned of a rise in the death toll and possible aftershocks.
In the videos on social media, people’s houses and shops have been damaged.
Herman Sahrman, a government official there, told JEE News that at least 300 people are treating the injured at a hospital in Sianjur.
Most of the injuries were broken bones caused by being caught in the debris of the buildings.
According to local reports, rescue workers are trying to evacuate people from the collapsed buildings, and managed to save a woman and her child.
In Jakarta, office workers rushed out of buildings in the civic and business district during the quake, which lasted about a minute.
“I was working when the floor beneath me was shaking. I could clearly feel the shock. I had to do something to process it,” lawyer Mayadita Walu told JEE News. Didn’t try, but it got even stronger and lasted a while.” .
Ahmad Rizwan, an office worker, told JEE News: “We are used to this [earthquake] in Jakarta, but people were still very nervous, so we were nervous too.”
Earthquakes are common in Indonesia, which sits on the “Ring of Fire” region of tectonic activity in the Pacific Ocean.
