Emergency services said 15 people were injured in two explosions at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Israeli police blamed the initial blast on an improvised explosive device planted at a bus station near the city’s exit, while a second later hit a bus stop in a civilian neighborhood in the city’s east.

Police claimed that the explosions, which occurred about 30 minutes apart, appeared to be a Palestinian attack.

Television images earlier showed debris strewn around the blast site, which was cordoned off by emergency services.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but health services said 12 people were taken to hospital from the first blast, with at least two seriously injured. At least three people were injured in the second blast, police said.

The blasts come after months of tension in the occupied West Bank after the Israeli military launched a crackdown following several deadly attacks in Israel.

Tensions have also been heightened by frequent clashes between Muslims and groups of unauthorized Jewish worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Qunawa said the bombings “occurred as a result of the occupation and the crimes of the settlers”.

The blasts come as former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is negotiating with allies to form a new right-wing government, including members of religious and far-right parties.
