Baku: In order to promote mutual trade between the two countries, Azerbaijan has announced a five-year tax exemption on the import of rice from Pakistan.
Addressing the international conference “Along the Middle Corridor: Geopolitics, Security and Economy” held at ADA University in Baku on the second day, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that this decision was made in the past few days with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The Azerbaijani president was responding to questions from the participants by Khalid Taimur Akram, executive director of the Center for Global and Strategic Studies of Pakistan.
The President said that he had discussed with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the possibility of further intensifying bilateral economic and trade cooperation and Pakistan’s decision on special regulations for rice is a reflection of this.
He said that he has decided to take this step to promote mutual trade between the two countries.
If brother country has high quality rice then why should we buy rice from any other place? So, this decision was clearly based on our fraternal ties,” Azeri media quoted the president as saying.
Commenting further, the President of Azerbaijan said that they have excellent relations with Pakistan.
President Aliyev added: “We are extremely grateful for Pakistan’s continued support for Azerbaijan-Armenia relations.
“During the occupation, during the war, and after the liberation of our territories, Pakistan was always with us. And this political and moral support is greatly appreciated by the people of Azerbaijan.”
He said that he knows that Pakistan’s Gwadar port is turning into a major international hub.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan and Azerbaijan will work on increasing economic cooperation through rail and Gwadar port.
