Local elections are being held in Azad Kashmir after 31 years.

Muzaffarabad: After 31 years, the first phase of local body elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is underway.

Polling is going on in three districts of Wadi Neelam, Wadi Jhelum and Muzaffarabad of Muzaffarabad division. It will be till 5 pm.

About 2,725 candidates are in the fray for 614 local body seats. Among the candidates are 31 women.

Meanwhile, 19 candidates have already been elected as councilors unopposed.

About 1223 polling stations and booths have been set up for the elections, including 397 for men, 387 for women and 530 combined stations.

The candidates include 575 from PTI, 465 from Muslim League-N, 545 from People’s Party, 113 from All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference, 67 from TLP, 46 from Jamaat-e-Islami while 900 independent candidates are included.
