Kylian Mbappe scored twice for France as the defending champions beat Denmark to become the first team in the knockout stages to set a World Cup mark.
The forward once again stole the show in the second half with strikes to back it up.
Mbappe had earlier fired over from 12 yards and forced Kasper Schmeichel to save with a rising shot.
But the Paris Saint-Germain star broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, exchanging a one-two before stroking with Theo Hernandez.
Denmark equalized with their first effort on target just seven minutes later when defender Andreas Christensen headed home at the far post after France failed to clear a corner.
Although Christensen may have considered himself lucky to still be on the pitch at the moment and only to be shown a yellow card on 20 minutes for pulling back Mbepe, who wanted to run clear.
France keeper Hugo Lloris made a quick stop to keep out Tottenham team-mate Pierre-Emile Hodgeberg’s first-time shot, while Martin Braithwaite fired into the side netting with a twist.
Four years ago, Mbappe became France’s youngest goalscorer in the competition at the age of 19.
And with four minutes remaining, he grabbed the winner, sneaking in at the far post to turn in Antoine Griezmann’s cross.
Box office Mbappe is in the spotlight.
Before the game, all eyes were on Olivier Giroud and whether he could become France’s all-time leading scorer and overtake Thierry Henry.
But the AC Milan striker failed to make an impact and was substituted shortly after the 61st-minute opener as Mbappe stepped into the spotlight.
Just 23, he already has 31 international goals and is fast approaching Giroud and Henry’s 51-goal mark.
Mbappe’s double helped France win their sixth consecutive World Cup game for the first time and also become the first holders to qualify from the group stage since Brazil in 2006.
He converted the first after a lively exchange with Theo Hernandez, who replaced brother Lucas after the tournament ended with a knee injury.
Defender Raphael Varane started a game for the first time since October 22, when he left the pitch in tears after suffering a muscle strain in Manchester United’s Premier League game against Chelsea.
He had the first chance when a flicked header was cleared off the line by Joachim Mahel.
Adrien Rabiot’s header was then parried away by Schmeichel, while the Nice keeper also kept out Griezmann’s low drive.
Although Denmark equalized through Christensen’s header – just one of two attempts on goal for Kasper Hjelmand’s men – Mbappe turned in Griezmann’s cross before celebrating ecstatically in front of flag-waving French fans.
