Noted industrialist and patron of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati) SM Munir died of cardiac arrest in Karachi on Monday.
The former chairman of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) complained of fever after which he went home before the office. He was then taken to the hospital. However, Munir could not survive.
Munir also served as a board member of several banks and private firms and was himself involved in the leather industry.
Munir was an accomplished industrialist with experience in sectors ranging from tanneries, textiles and banking.
He was awarded Best Export Performance Trophy by Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Gold Medallion Award by International Export Association, UK and Best Businessman of the Year by FPCCI. Awarded The Year Award.
In addition, he was awarded the ‘Star Ezaar’ and ‘Star Imtiaz’ by the President of Pakistan in 2006 and 2007 respectively, in recognition of his outstanding public services to humanity.
Munir’s contributions and achievements extend beyond the economic field to the field of education. He was awarded an honorary degree of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) by the Governor of Sindh in January 2009.
He was a member of the Board of Governors of FPCCI, IoBM and Greenwich College, Karachi. He was on the board of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, Lahore, Kidney Center Post Graduate Training Institute.
He also served as the Chairman of Chiniot Anjuman Islamia which runs many hospitals, maternity homes, schools and colleges in Karachi, Faisalabad and Chiniot.
Munir was honored with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Presidency in 2012 and in the same year, the then Mayor of Markham (Canada) Frank Scarpetti also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the presence of Members of Parliament.
