Apple is reportedly working on its new VR/AR headset that will feature iris recognition technology for login and payments.
According to The Information, the eye-scanning technology will use multiple cameras – similar to iOS features such as Touch ID or Face ID.
Additionally, it will help differentiate Apple’s product from its major competitor, the MetaQuest Pro, which was unveiled by Facebook’s parent company earlier this week.
While the Quest Pro has built-in cameras that can monitor facial and eye activity, it doesn’t yet use them for identification.
The website claims that the US tech giant will also use downward-facing cameras to record users’ legs, a body area Meta is currently sorting out.
Apple’s VR headset is expected to release in 2023. However, this timetable has reportedly slipped several times as the project has been in development for years.
What’s more, with a price tag of $3,000, it costs twice as much as the Quest Pro, which is marketed as a high-end headset rather than a mass consumer product for experts.
