Major cities and towns witness processions commemorating this historic day, where scholars and orators deliver sermons, highlighting various aspects of the Karbala tragedy.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made across the country to prevent any untoward incident during the processions and to provide security to the pilgrims.
Meanwhile, mobile signals are down in several cities after the Interior Ministry directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend mobile services not only on 9 and 10 Muharram but also on 11.
President Alvi appealed for unity.
Sharing his message in commemoration of the historic day, President Dr. Arif Alvi urged the countrymen to put aside differences and promote compassion, tolerance and consultation to become a united nation and work for the development of Pakistan.

The President said that Hazrat Imam Hussain’s stand against the tyrant Yazid was not for power or revenge, but it was a principled stand for justice, protection of Islamic values and protecting the Islamic society from corruption and oppression.
“This courageous act teaches us that we should not bow down to oppression and raise our voice against injustice, no matter what the cost,” he said. He said that the behavior of Hazrat Imam Hussain’s companions, who were standing with him. Towards this day of commotion, taught us the importance of loyalty, righteousness and supporting those who struggle for truth and justice, said Dr Alvi.
He further said that the battle of Karbala taught Muslims selflessness and sacrifice for a great cause.
“Despite being outnumbered and outnumbered, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) refused to give up on the principles and values of Islam.”
The President asked Muslims to remember the importance of dialogue and understanding between different schools of thought.
