At the end of Special Olympics, Pakistan won 10 gold medals

KARACHI: Pakistan won a total of 10 gold medals in the 16th Special Olympics World Games that concluded in Berlin on Sunday.

Pakistan’s gold medal tally increased after cyclist Mahfouz Abid won one in the 10km time trial race during the Games’ cycling event. He covered the distance of 10 km in 23 minutes and 02.02 seconds.

It was the first time that Mahfouz, who hails from Karachi, participated in the World Games. He said that the cyclist had been preparing for the special sports event for the past two years.

“I am passionate about winning more medals for Pakistan in the upcoming international competitions,” Safir said.

In the 500m time trial race, Madeeha Tahir of Pakistan won the silver medal by covering the prescribed distance in 1 minute 14.15 seconds, while Amna Arshad won the bronze medal by covering the distance in 1 minute 16.82 seconds.

Oman won the gold medal by defeating Pakistan 6-3 in the final of the futsal event. Pakistan finished second with a silver medal.

Pakistan finished fourth in women’s doubles, men’s singles and unified men’s doubles of the tennis event.

In the Bocce team event, Pakistan’s Mahnoor, Simran Mahesh Lal, Jamilur Rehman and Farhan Aslam won the silver medal after defeating Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Farhan Aslam won bronze in men’s singles, and Mah Noor won bronze in women’s singles.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Muhammad Luqman and Habibullah won gold medals to increase the country’s tally of gold medals.

Luqman clocked 15.21 seconds to win the gold medal in the 100m race. He also won silver medal in long jump.

Meanwhile, in powerlifting, Habibullah won gold in the 83kg deadlift. He also won silver medals in the squat, bench press and combined weights.

Mirwaiz won a silver medal in the 3000m race. He completed the distance in ten minutes and eleven seconds.

Pakistan’s hockey team won the bronze medal by defeating Paraguay 3-2 in the third place game. This is the first time that Pakistan is getting prominent in hockey.
