The suspect in a Canadian stabbing that killed 10 people and injured 19 has died after being arrested by police.
Myles Sanderson, 32, suffered “medical complications” and later died after being arrested following a high-speed chase on a highway in the province of Saskatchewan, police say.
He did not give any details. An unnamed official previously said Sanderson died of self-inflicted injuries.
Ten victims are undergoing treatment in hospital.
The condition of three is critical.
It is unclear what led to Sunday’s mass killings, which involved 13 separate crime scenes. Both suspects – Myles Sanderson and his brother Damian, 31 – have died.
Most of those killed in the riots — and the suspects themselves — were from the James Smith Cree Nation, an indigenous community.
Police found Damien’s body on Monday and are investigating whether his brother killed him.
“Our province is breathing a collective sigh of relief this evening,” Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said Wednesday night.
He said police received a report earlier in the day of a vehicle stolen from outside Myles Sanderson’s property. The homeowner was not injured during the robbery.
Police gave chase as Sanderson fled at speeds of up to 150 km/h (93 mph).
They forced his car into a ditch and officers found a knife in it when they arrested him, the police chief said.
He was taken into custody at around 15:30 local time (22:30 BST) and taken to a hospital in Saskatoon, where he was pronounced dead, it added.
News of Sanderson’s capture came soon after an alert was sent to Canadian mobile phone users warning people near the town of Wakaw to “seek immediate shelter/shelter in place” because a man armed with a knife had been seen driving a stolen white Chevrolet Avalanche in the area.
