ChatGPT Maker Fields Tool AI to search for written text

The creators of a chat GPT bot touted for its ability to mimic human handwriting on Tuesday released a tool designed to detect whether written work is being done by artificial intelligence. When are they written?

The announcement comes amid heated debate at schools and universities in the United States and around the world over concerns that the software could be used to help students with assignments and cheat on exams.

US-based OpenAI said in a blog post on Tuesday that its detection tool was “trained to distinguish between text written by humans and text written by AIs from different providers.”

OpenAI’s bot, which recently received a massive cash injection from Microsoft, responds to simple prompts with reams of text inspired by data collected from the Internet.

OpenAI warns that its tool can make mistakes, especially with texts containing less than 1,000 characters.

“While it is impossible to reliably detect all AI-authored text, we believe that good classifiers can inform mitigations for false claims that AI is generated,” OpenAI said in the post. The text was written by a human being.”

“For example, running automated disinformation campaigns, using AI tools to commit academic dishonesty, and positioning AI chatbots as humans.”

A top French university last week banned students from using ChatGPT to complete assignments, the first such ban at a college in the country.

The decision came shortly after Chet GPT passed the US law school exam after writing essays on topics ranging from constitutional law to taxation.

ChatGPT still makes factual errors, but educational facilities have been quick to ban the AI tool.

OpenAI said in the post, “We recognize that AI text recognition has been a major point of debate among educators, and it is equally important to understand the limitations and impact of AI-generated text classifiers in the classroom. Be recognized.”

“We are engaging with educators in the US to learn what they are seeing in their classrooms and to discuss the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT.”

Authorities in New York and other jurisdictions have banned its use in schools.

A group of Australian universities have said they will change exam formats to eliminate AI tools and count them as cheating.

OpenAI said it recommends using the classifier only with English text because it performs worse in other languages.
