Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday formed a high-powered committee comprising members of the country’s top investigative and intelligence services to investigate the leaked audios from the Prime Minister’s Office and House.
The committee was also given a short timeline of seven days to complete its work.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on September 30, which came out on Tuesday, a 12-member committee has been constituted.
The committee will be headed by Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and includes four other federal ministers who are representatives of various parties forming the coalition government.
Other members include Federal Ministers for Law Azam Nazir Tarar (Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz), Climate Change Sherry Rehman (Pakistan People’s Party), Communications Asad Mehmood (Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam) and Information Technology and Telecommunication Syed Aminul Haq. The non-ministerial members include the Secretary of the Cabinet Division, the Chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Director General of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
Other participating members include technical experts nominated by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and ISI.
The Secretary of the National Telecommunication and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) will also be a co-member of the inquiry committee.
Committee Task?
The committee is tasked with monitoring and reviewing “cyber security breach investigations and ensuring that all critical aspects of the matter are covered”.
The committee was given seven days to complete the task.
The high-powered committee will also review the existing cyber security protocols of the Prime Minister’s Office/House and suggest immediate measures and action plans to develop fool-proof security systems and digital ecosystems to protect the cyberspace of the Prime Minister’s Office/House. The committee has been directed to submit its recommendations to the Prime Minister within seven days and ensure that such incidents do not recur in future.
