ISLAMABAD: A District and Sessions Court in Islamabad on Wednesday reserved judgment on the bail plea of PTI leader Azam Swati in the case related to controversial tweets.

The court will pronounce the verdict tomorrow.

The PTI senator was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) last week after a case was registered against him for tweeting against the army chief and state institutions.

Special Judge Central Raja Asif heard the plea of Swati – who is on 14-day judicial remand in Adiala Jail – and reserved the verdict after the parties concluded their arguments.

Arguing before the court, the FIA prosecutor said that Azam Swati shared a hateful tweet against the Army Chief and tried to create disharmony in the armed forces.

“Azam Swati blamed the COS when some persons were acquitted in a case. What does the army chief have to do with his acquittal?

The FIA representative further said that the PTI leader admitted to tweeting during the investigation and added that “Azam Swati made inflammatory statements against the army chief and institutions in public forum”.

Swati’s lawyer Babar Awan said in his arguments that his client exercised the constitutional right of speech.

Awan claimed that the senator was tortured and humiliated while in custody.

Was there a rebellion in the army after Azam Swati’s tweet? he asked. Did any Subedar run after Azam Swati’s tweet? Did the captain resign?

Later, the court reserved the verdict which will be pronounced tomorrow.
