DISCOs have demanded an additional hike of Rs 6 per unit in electricity rates.

ISLAMABAD: In yet another disturbing news for electricity consumers, Pakistan’s 10 Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have added Rs 3.50 to Rs 6 more in consumer bills under the last quarterly tariff adjustment for the last fiscal year 2022-23. Per unit increment requested, JEE News reported on Tuesday, citing an official.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will on August 23 hear the applications of 10 DISCOs, which may result in an additional burden of Rs 144.688 billion on consumers, till July 1, 2023.

The official said: “If the desired increase is received from consumers in the first three months of FY24, the tariff hike will be in the range of Rs 5-6 per unit.

“However, if the hike is spread over six months, the tariff hike will be in the range of Rs 2.50-3 per unit. Ultimately, it is up to the government to decide how to deal with the hike. The fourth quarter of FY23 quaterly.”

After including surcharges, electricity duty, PTV fee, GST, sales tax, FPA and ongoing QTA, the average tariff for ToU customers in Q3FY23 is Rs 49.57 per unit. .

With the increase expected in Q4FY23, end-users will see an increase of Rs 53-56 per unit. This increase will lead to more financial difficulties not only for domestic consumers but also for commercial and industrial consumers.

Out of Rs 144.688 billion, 10 DISCOs paid Rs 122.413 billion towards efficiency, Rs 7.497 billion towards variable O&M, Rs 14.349 billion to UoSC and MoF, T&D on monthly FCA for the last quarter of FY23. 7.352 billion in terms of impact of losses, Rs 6.960 billion in terms of impact of additional units and Rs 34 million due to impact of lifeline customers.

Under the fourth QTA for FY23 requests, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) collected Rs 23.491 billion from consumers, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) Rs 16.139 billion, Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) Rs 9.328 billion, and Islamabad Electric Supply Company Limited (IESCO) Rs.9.891 billion.

In addition, Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) received Rs.31.877 billion, Multan Electric Power Company (MAPCO) received Rs.27.266 billion, Quetta Electric Supply Company (KESCO) received Rs.7.582 billion, and Sukkur Electric Supply Company (SEPCO) received Rs.5. Requested. 195 billion, and Tribal Electric Supply Company (Tesco) requested to collect Rs 4.016 billion from consumers.
