According to a report by ARY News on Wednesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the dates for the second phase of local elections in Sindh and by-elections in National Assembly (NA) constituencies.
The Election Commission has announced that local body elections will be held in all the districts of Karachi on October 23, while the by-elections in eight constituencies of the National Assembly will be held on October 16.
The decision was taken today in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The commission sought a report from the authorities concerned regarding the districts of Hyderabad, the spokesman added, adding that the date of the LG election in Hyderabad would also be announced soon.
Sanaullah met the Chief Election Commissioner.
Home Minister Rana Sanaullah met Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja at the ECP headquarters to discuss the issues related to by-elections in 12 constituencies of National and Provincial Assemblies. Sanaullah was accompanied by Home Secretary during the visit to ECP headquarters.
Rana Sanaullah and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja discussed by-elections, security arrangements and flood situation in NA and PA constituencies.
Earlier on September 8, the commission had postponed the by-elections scheduled in 13 constituencies. This decision was taken by Chief Election Commissioner Sultan Sikandar Raja while presiding over a high-level meeting.
It was decided in the meeting that the by-elections on September 11, September 25 and October 2 will be postponed and new dates will be announced soon. The Election Commission says that the by-election was postponed due to devastating rains and floods.
However, parties across the political divide opposed the decision, accusing each other of running away from the competition.
The commission had also postponed the August 28 local body elections on the report of the Sindh government before the postponement of the by-elections across the country.
