FIFA lifts ban on Zimbabwe ahead of World Cup qualifiers

FIFA has officially lifted its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) after an 18-month period, clearing the way for the country’s participation in the African qualification competition for the 2026 World Cup.

Officials confirmed the decision on Monday, days before the draw for the qualifiers. To ensure smooth operations during the transitional phase, an Interim Normalization Committee has been appointed to oversee ZIFA until the holding of new administrative elections.

Zimbabwe faced suspension from the world governing body in February 2022 due to government interference in the management of the troubled football association. Following allegations of misappropriation of funds for Zimbabwe’s participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals, ZIFA’s executive committee was dissolved in November 2021 by the country’s Sports and Entertainment Commission, a government-appointed body. It is an institution.

FIFA’s Bureau of the Council decided to lift the suspension and set up a normalization committee, saying, “The Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided to lift the suspension imposed on the Zimbabwe Football Association in February 2022 and immediately establish a Decided to appoint a Normalization Committee. Effect.” The committee’s primary functions include reviewing ZIFA rules and election regulations to ensure compliance with FIFA regulations and facilitating their adoption during the ZIFA Congress.

The Normalization Committee, chaired by local administrator Lincoln Mutasa, has been mandated to perform its duties until June 2024. This important move allows Zimbabwe to participate in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the draw of which is scheduled to take place during the CAF Congress in Abidjan. this thursday. The first round of fixtures is set to begin in November, marking the country’s return to competitive international football.
