French Open 2023: Nick Kyrgios out of tournament after injuring foot during alleged burglary at home

Nick Kyrgios will miss the French Open after suffering a foot injury during an alleged burglary at his home, according to his agent.

An Australian man’s car was stolen from his mother at gunpoint in Canberra earlier this month, police allege.

Kyrgios, 28, has yet to play this year after undergoing knee surgery in January.

“With all the things that were going on, Nick injured the side of his left foot. We don’t know how,” his agent Daniel Horsfall told Reuters.

Horsfall suggested that Kyrgios had injured himself while running from home after hearing his mother in distress.

Later, a person was arrested in connection with the incident.

Outlining Kyrgios’ pain, Horsfall added: “He couldn’t slide, couldn’t go on the court because every time he put a shoe on it, it would move and it would open again.

“His knee, as far as we’re concerned, is actually in great shape, the surgery went well.

“His fitness is at a fantastic level. It was only when we got to the last point of this rehabilitation, the on-court loading, that this freak accident happened.”

Horsfall added that the injury had set Kyrgios back “about two and a half weeks”.

Kyrgios tweeted that he was “only human” above a link to a story about his withdrawal from Roland Garros, where he has not played since 2017.

Horsfall added that Kyrgios was expected to be fit for the grass court season, including Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final last year.

The French Open will be played from May 28 to June 11.
