Gilgit-Baltistan saw a wave of change in its legislature as its first female deputy speaker was elected unopposed on Monday.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) nominee Sadia Danish took over the post after a consensus between her party and the forward bloc of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which supported his nomination.
After Danish was elected unopposed, the selection process for the Deputy Speaker of the GB Assembly concluded on Monday. She later took the oath of office, which was administered by Speaker Nazir Advocate, who presided over the 22nd session of the Assembly.
On the other hand, PTI did not submit nomination papers on this occasion. They had earlier moved a no-confidence motion against him and removed his Speaker and made his Deputy Speaker the Speaker of the GB Assembly.
Before the historic development, the Assembly session was chaired by the Speaker.
Danish was a member of the GB Legislative Assembly from 2009 to 2014 and was also part of the GB Cabinet.
She was also the former Minister of Information, Tourism, Sports and Culture. She was also the Information Secretary of the PPP and a member of the National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW).
Gul Bar Khan – New Chief Minister of GB
Last week, PTI’s Forward Bloc leader Gul Bar Khan was elected GB’s new chief minister, days after controversy marred elections for the top post.
Khan, who received 19 votes out of 20 members present in the House, was elected unopposed as three other candidates for the post withdrew their nomination papers.
An independent lawmaker, Nawaz Khan Naji, abstained from voting, with PPP and Muslim League (N) MPs supporting the new chief minister.
All 11 members of PTI’s ‘like-minded group’ boycotted the polls, alleging rigging.
