Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Heeraben Modi died at the age of 99.

Mr Modi tweeted on Friday morning, “A glorious century rests at the feet of God.

He lit his mother’s pyre on Friday in Gandhinagar in western Gujarat state – where Heeraben lived.

Heeraben was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after his condition worsened.

The Indian Prime Minister often visited his mother on important occasions and festivals to seek her blessings.

Her life and sacrifices had “shaped” her mind, personality and self-esteem, Mr. Modi wrote on June 18, when Heeraben turned 99.

“My mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers,” he wrote.

She was last seen in public on December 4 when Mr. Modi visited her home during the assembly elections in her home state of Gujarat.

Heeraben lived with Mr. Modi’s younger brother and his family.

Several politicians and ministers have expressed their grief over his death on social media.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that he was “deeply saddened” by the news.

He wrote that the death of a mother creates a void in a person’s life which is impossible to fill.

Former Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu also expressed his condolences.

Heeraben was born in 1923 in Visnagar, Mehsana district of Gujarat.

Mr. Modi wrote, “His childhood was full of poverty and deprivation.

As a teenager, she married Damodardas Molchand Modi and moved to the town of Vadnagar, a few kilometers away.

“In Vadnagar, our family lived in a tiny house that didn’t even have a window, let alone a luxury like a toilet or bathroom,” Mr. Modi wrote in his blog.

He described his mother as punctual, clean and hardworking. “While working, she would sing her favorite hymns and hymns,” he wrote.

Heeraban never attended public events, Mr. Modi wrote, adding that she accompanied him to only two events — the second in 2001, when he was first sworn in as Gujarat chief minister. had taken

“Since then, she has never accompanied me to a single public event,” he wrote.

Although he became the Prime Minister of India in 2014, Heeraban visited him in Delhi only two years later. Mr. Modi tweeted pictures of the surroundings of his official residence.

Months later, when Mr. Modi’s government controversially banned 500 and 1,000 rupee notes to crack down on undeclared wealth, Heeraban, like millions of Indians, visited a bank to exchange old notes. Photographed while doing.
