Humayun Akhtar quit PTI in protest against May 9 violence.

LAHORE: Senior PTI leader Humayun Akhtar Khan quit the party on Thursday in protest against the May 9 incident.

Humayun Akhtar, who was an MNA in 1990, 1993, 1997 and 2002, has also been a PTI ticket holder since Imran vacated the seat from Lahore in 2018.

In a tweet, Humayun said that his father Akhtar Abdul Rahman was part of an army that he was proud of. He said that this nation will never forget the blood and sacrifices of our martyrs. Humayun said that the events of May 9 brought grief to the entire nation as well as his family, adding that the manner in which the memorials of the martyrs were desecrated was highly condemnable.

“Under these circumstances, it is difficult for me to continue my association with the PTI. Therefore, I announce to quit the party,” Humayun said.

He said that the nation has always given great respect to the army and I firmly believe that this bond of love between the nation and its guards will always remain.

Notably, since the May 9 violence, a large number of leaders have left the PTI. Among those who quit PTI are Imran Ismail, Sardar Usman Buzdar, Aamir Kayani, Fawad Chaudhry, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, former MNA Faizullah Kamuka, Mehmood Maulvi, former Punjab ministers Hashim Dogar, Murad Ras, Sahibzada Saeedul Hasan, Chief Minister K. Former Special Assistants included. Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, Former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Tanveer and many others.

Humayun Akhtar was first elected in 1990 when he defeated the Secretary General of the People’s Party and former Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Sheikh Rafiq. In the 1993 election, he defeated a political heavyweight and a two-time winner from the NA-93 seat, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan. In 1997, he was elected MNA from Rahim Yar Khan and in 2002 again won the NA-125 seat after a thrilling contest defeating the PML-N and PPP candidates. His brother Haroon Akhtar Khan was also elected MPA in 1993 when he defeated Qasim Zia of PPP from the then PP 119.
