LAHORE: Police on Saturday detained a man and his wife to investigate the sudden death of Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shariq Jamal.
The senior police officer was found dead under suspicious circumstances at his residence, as was initially reported after the couple shifted him from their residence to a private DHA hospital in Lahore.
However, when the police probed the matter further, it came to light that the DIG was in the couple’s flat at the time of the death.
The couple revealed that Jamal was with them in their flat and had brought him to a medical facility when his condition worsened.
According to details, Jamal was brought to DHA private hospital at half past one where he was declared dead on arrival.
The police confirmed the statement of the couple and said that the senior police official was not at their house but in an apartment in Lahore from where they were shifted to the hospital.
The circumstances surrounding Jamal’s sudden death raised concerns, prompting authorities to launch a full investigation into the incident.
Although the relatives did not want to do the post-mortem, on the insistence of the police, the body of the deceased was sent to Jinnah Hospital for post-mortem.
According to the police, an autopsy was being conducted to determine the cause of Jamal’s “unnatural death”.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) team and the police inspected the said apartment and collected some evidence like food and utensils samples which will be sent for testing later.
It should be noted that Jamal played a key role as DIG Investigation in the investigation of Minar Pakistan Harassment case and the arrest of the accused.
